Matthew N. Rockville, MD

We are closing on a house on 2/28. Currently the basement is only accessible from the outside and we would like to install a spiral staircase to connect the basement and first floor. The seller will help pay for it (up to a certain amount) if we get a quote by this Thursday for a lawyer to hold the money in escrow. The stairwell will be in a corner. There is currently a 3 ft diameter square hole that has been boarded up for this purpose. The distance from the basement floor to surface of the 1st story floor is reported to be 9 ft and 5/16 inches. We would like to have the hole increased in order to fit a staircase that will be up to code as a primary staircase. We are flexible to the materials to be used but would like for the stairway to match the log cabin feel of the house. The staircase can be installed any time after 2/28; for escrow, a quote is needed by this Thursday 2/23 at 5pm.
